Aftercare is a very important element in the success of a clients recovery process. A lot of addicts are under the false belief that once they finish treatment they cured of their addiction but sobriety is a continuing process and treatment only gave a client the necessary tools to be able to manage their addiction. Relapse is a ongoing pain in the neck for recovering addicts and having sober people in place to encourage them and who they can use as a social outlet is necessary and beneficial. For a recovering addict, temptation is around every corner and it is this reason alone that a strong aftercare plan and support system will need to be in place before completion of the recovery process.

Hello Ellen, I think that your post is very informative and I think you are correct about the assessment being a very critical part of the evaluation in which helps the evaluator find out what and where to start in treating a client. Every client is not the same that is why it is very important to do an assessment first and get a foundation how to start treatment. Also you are correct about aftercare treatment being provided to all clients to make sure that they stay on track with their rehabilitation. The after care plan may include group meetings, follow up reports, drug and alcohol testing and counseling sessions. Great post I enjoyed discussing it with you and I look forward to our future discussions.

What I have learned from your discussion board posting is that the "Key" to any type of treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction problem is the client's participation in the whole process and building a good rapport between the counselor and the client will also help them in establishing an appropriate treatment plan that meets the needs of the client, along with getting a correct diagnosis and possible correct medications and support which is needing during the continuum care of the client also. I further, agree with you that a client needs to follow-through the whole screening, diagnosing, assessment and treatment plan so they don't run the risk of relapsing. For a client to be successful in reaching the end of their goal(s) in treatment a counselor needs to actively listen to their client while also showing respect for their thoughts and feelings and accepting them without judging them. Another thing, explaining the whole process from start to finish will also help them to understand what they need do next and helping them to focus on their strengths and the positive aspects of treatment be an encouragement for them to want to get sober and continue to remain sober.

Thank you for your post. I think your list of things which must be included in treatment is great! I especially appreciate that you included open listening and absolute acceptance as two critical characteristics of an effective client-counselor relationship. Many clients are dealing with other issues besides their addictions or mental health disorder, such as sexuality, religious preference, or non-traditional families. I think a lot of people don't take into account that all of these factors can increase stress in a person's life, especially if they lack a solid support system, and added stress can be the cause or an aggravator to the addiction and mental health issues. What advice would you give clients who are dealing with some of these things, and the possible persecution or non-acceptance from their friends and/or family because of them?

I really enjoyed reading your post, and found it to be informative. What I learned is that a treatment plan is viewed more as a map or blueprint, it allows the counselor/therapist and the client onto the right path of healing. Assessing the client is a critical part of developing a treatment plan. It shows what the client needs to be successful in their treatment. The assessment is made up of past and present diagnosis, and the clients treatment history.Once the client has gone through detox and treatment goals are met, you feel it is important for there to be an aftercare plan in place. I agree with your statement, I think this will greatly help to reduce the chances of relapse. You went on to say that a successful aftercare will help the client to reach good health, have a home and a purpose, and to have a sense of belonging in the community.
