Introduction
The healthcare world generates a lot of controversial issues as a result of individual
mindsets and perceptions. When an individual is incarcerated, their health care becomes the
responsibility of the government. People who get imprisoned have state and federal laws that
authorize them to access treatment, medical care, and facilities when they need. The federal
Bureau of Prisons is a governmental agency that assists in regulating healthcare given to
imprisoned people within any correctional facility in the United States.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)
The BOP was initiated in 1930 and sanctioned by Herbert Hoover the then president of
the United States. Its main headquarters are in Washington D.C. This agency is also a
subdivision of the Justice Department of United States. The Justice Department’s main
responsibility is to manage and handle the federal prisons system administration. Its only purpose
is to offer care that is compassionate and open-minded to prisoners placed within the United
States. The other responsibility of this agency is to offer medical assistance to prisoners as
governed by state and federal laws. However, there is a negative aspect of BOP. The agency is
responsible for conducting judicially authorized executions by injecting a lethal chemical to
inmates who are sentenced to death as a result of a crime. The agency maintains a chamber for
the lethal injection before, amid and after the execution, ensuring that it is set up correctly and
that the process is as humane as can be during the event. The structure of Federal Bureau of
Prisons comprises several divisions and has branches and boards of directors just like any other
agency in the United States.
