Module 3 Assignment – Movie Review HUS 3370 – Issues in Mental Health Watch a movie that is directly related to course material (mental illness, mental disorders, effects of mental illness on relationships and family, stigma, etc.). When you watch a film make notes regarding the disorder presented in the film. Pay particular attention to the symptoms and behaviors demonstrated. Do they seem in line with the information presented in the overview of mental disorders in Module 2? If you choose a movie that presents a disorder not covered in Module 2, do an Internet search to determine symptoms and behaviors commonly associated with the disorder. How valid/accurate do you think the film is in regard to the representation of the disorder? What do you think that the movie industry is trying to say to the public about mental disorders? Do you think that the public’s perception/perspective of the disorder might be influenced by the way that it is portrayed in the film? Explain your answer. Write a 700-750 word reaction paper reflecting on the content of the video, what you learned from this movie as it relates to mental health issues, and your responses to the questions above. Start your paper with a brief summary (one paragraph) of the movie and a sentence or two stating what you believe is the major point/intent of the movie. Post your review as an attachment to the Movie Review Dropbox. NOTE: You must watch the movie to complete this paper. The paper is to include original thoughts, perceptions, reactions and ideas - it is not merely a summary of a movie! Do not copy material from the DVD box or a review of the movie. HUS 3370 – Issues in Mental Health What is a reaction paper? In various courses throughout your academic experience you may be given an assignment to develop a reaction paper in response to something you have seen, done or read. The purpose of a reaction paper is to give you the opportunity to think about the experience (i.e., an article that you have just read, a movie that you have just seen, an activity that you have just participated in, etc.), interpret its meaning, identify your impressions, analyze your feelings or reactions, and convey your opinions related to the content/activity. What is usually included in a reaction paper? Your instructor may ask you to include specific elements in your paper, or may simply give you the assignment to write and submit a reaction paper after you have completed a certain action or activity. Generally, reaction papers contain variations of the following elements:  Identification and brief summary/overview of the focus of your paper (i.e., article, movie, activity)  Your interpretation of the theme, issues, or situations involved - with supportive statements/references to illustrate your points  Strengths and weaknesses of the work  How you feel about the topic - were you moved, shocked, surprised, angry, bored, etc? What do you think caused these feelings and reactions?  Your reactions to the material, event, situation, activity  What were you thinking about during the experience - did something in particular stand out?  What key impressions or thoughts will stay with you the longest?  Is there a take home message - what was the main point? How do I write a reaction paper? You might want to take notes during the activity. Jot down your thoughts, ideas or particular passages/lines/events that really catch your attention. Consider making an outline to help you balance between factual review, personal reflection and analysis. As with most papers, your reaction paper should have: Introduction a. identify and summarize what you read, saw, did Body a. your interpretation/analysis, strengths, weaknesses b. your thoughts, feelings, reactions Conclusion a. Sum up the experience b. Identify the take home message or lasting impression Your paper will include both first and third person construction (not generally allowed in APA format of academic writing) since you are combining both factual summary material and personal reflection. Remember to include a title page, appropriate citations and references (including movies, TV episodes, personal communication), references page and paste the grading rubric for the assignment to the end of the paper. And, be sure to edit carefully for grammar and spelling.
