Description
Process & Submittals
P1.1 Read and Analyze text – Read Origins of the Dwelling Hut by Vitruvius, Analyze the story in terms of “three act structure” identifying the divisions and turning points in the story. Identify five themes within the story that ‘resonate’ and could be developed further. Record your analysis in your sketchbook.
P1.2 Read and take graphic notes – Read Preface and Education of the Architect by Vitruvius. Take notes in your sketchbook including:
- vocabulary list: identify new words and concepts (min. 15), provide brief definition
- outline with short synopsis (1‐2 sentences) for each section/paragraph
- graphic notes – i.e. diagrams illustrating concepts and relationships
- P1.3 Summary, Script and Storyboard – Prepare to create a graphic novel based on the Vitruvius story. It is important that you develop a point of view based on your understanding of the most important theme or themes found in the story. Your rendition will use the retelling of a common story to emphasize architectural values that you consider important. In preparation for the graphic Novel prepare in your sketchbook:
- a 3-4 sentence plot summary

P1.1 Read and Analyze text
In the Origins of the Dwelling Hut, Vitruvius argues that, in the beginning, human beings lived
in the bushes just like animals. They dwelled in a thick forest. The human language had not yet
developed during that time, and therefore, the language at the time was individualistic in nature.
Everyone made different sounds based on the sounds they encountered from time to time.
The turning point in the story occurs when one part of the forest got fire from the action of the
storms and winds on trees. The people came around the fire, and became fascinated by the
warmth it gave them. They started using gestures to express their feelings about the fire, which
eventually brought them together. They allocated names to various tools that they used in
common, so as to enhance their communication.
Due to the destruction of the forest, the people realized the need for a shelter. They started
building shelters in resemblance to what the other animals had. For instance, they build caves on
mountain sides, green boughs, and twigs that resembled nests. They also built forked stakes
which were connected by twigs and covered the walls with mud. When rains came in winter,
they realized that their shelter was destroyed by rains and then redesigned the roof to a peaked
roof that had sloping sides to allow the rain water to flow. Later on, people gave up huts and
started building houses made of bricks and stone.
