Weighed Scoring Model (WSM) Name: Michael Wetzel Date: 1/5/2018 Being I am only two classes away from graduating with a BA degree in Project Management I would like to use the degree to promote myself within my current company. Currently, I am a Manager 1 at the Port of San Francisco, m promotional step would be becoming a Manger 3 which is a Superintendent of Harbor Maintenance. Even though career goal, I also thought of branching out to other departments with in the San Francisco Civil Service Employme sector. The civil service jobs consist of Assistant Deputy Director of Park and Rec, and Deputy Director of Operation of Public Works. Even though it would affect my seniority, I have also concerned the private sector for employmen manager if it was financially competitive. Criteria Elements Benefits Retirement Pension Salary Commuting Job Security Weighted Scores Weight given to choice 0.25 0.20 0.25 0.10 0.20 1.00 Sperintentent of Assistant Deputy Harbor Director of Park and Maintenance Rec 60 60 60 40 70 60.00 60 70 70 50 80 67.50 1) The results of my model seems closer then I would of thought prior to completing the WSM. It seems that the ci positions are more appealing to me. Assistant Deputy Director of Park and Rec seems to be the best career choice 2) Being I am working towards my Project Management degree with the goal of working for a civil service departm city, I would say that the WMS results align nicely with my future career goal. The Assistant Deputy Director positio retirement plan and job security. If I was only going for the financial benefit of a new career the private sector migh appealing, but with a family benefits and security overrides hourly wage. 3) I feel the most important thing is to complete my degree in Project Management, and next would be take as ma classes that the City of San Francisco offers to try to improve my human resources knowledge and improve my man results. It is Frank's 45th birthday and we need to determine the menu for Frank's birthday dinner. Frank and his wife Sally have two young children, and will be taken into consideration. Some preference will also be given to nutritious and heathy food, and meals that are good the next day (Frank likes leftovers). Criteria elements How much Frank will like meal How much Sally will like meal How much kids will like meal Good leftovers Nutrition/health Weighted Scores Weight given to choice 0.35 0.25 0.15 0.18 0.07 1.00 Steak and Chicken Pot Potatos Pie 99 20 81 95 25 70.65 85 5 80 60 15 54.85 Sushi Tofu Turkey Meal 74 90 72 15 70 66.80 2 98 25 15 95 38.30 1) According to the weighed scoring model created, the family will be having steak and potatoes for Frank's birthday dinner. However, now I am wondering if having leftovers should be weighed at 18%. I may decrease the weight there, add atmosphere of restaurant and create another model. 2) This assignment helped me reevaluate what I thought I wanted and what was important when choosing my birthday meal. Being able to look at the scores individually and the total weighted average for each choice helped me evaluate my choices. I also learned how to do weighted averages in MS Excel. 3) It took some extra time for me to figure out how to make the table visually appealing spreadsheet that prints on one page. Then I watched the my learning video on tables and realized it was easy. Now I can create nice looking tables at work. Sources used in Assignment Vigar, D. (2013). Currently, I am a Manager 1 at the Port of San Francisco, my next promotional step would be becoming a Manger 3 which is a Superintendent of Harbor Maintenance. Even though this is my current career goal, I also thought of branching out to other departments within the San Francisco Civil Service Employment and the private sector. The civil service jobs consist of Assistant Deputy Director of Park and Rec, and Deputy Director of Operations at Department of Public Works. Even though it would affect my seniority, I have also concerned the private sector for employment as a project manager if it was financially competitive. I feel that my WSM aligns with my short and long-term career goal in many ways. First, civil service job security and benefits allows me the opportunity to know that my family will be taken care both financially and medically. The commute time and location to the three city jobs allows me to attend my children’s sporting activities and school functions. My schedule can be predictable and family life is more stable for my wife and kids. According to my own research, the retirement project from the city is one of the most lucrative financially and as your wage increases your pension follows. Lastly, I know that private sector tends to give an employee a higher wage to provide less benefits or retirement. I would be willing to accept a smaller but competitive wage to know that my future retirement will be profitable. These are the reason I feel the Assistant Deputy Director of Park and Rec would my best short and long-term goal which was stated in my WSM. Since I work for the city of San Francisco, HR issues are one of the main concerns of our city charter. As a manager, and higher, it is our responsibility to know all the HR rules and how to relate them to our supervisors and line staff. Therefore, I feel it is my responsibility to take all the citywide training that is offered to make my company a safe and pleasant place for our employees. By me completing my degree, I can bring current knowledge that I have recently learned to suggest possible improvement to our city’s processes. It also allows me the knowledge to meet the qualifications for higher managerial jobs, and provides me the opportunity to improve himself financially. These are the two areas I feel I need to help accomplish my career goals. The WSM system could work in an organizational environment and I feel that I would like to incorporate it in my next project. Currently, our department only performs the actual hands on work, the administration departments decide the scheduling and handle all finances. With this assignment it seems that our company could benefit by combining all the department heads and creating a WSM for projects. Then everyone can rate their own criteria elements for the projects and prioritize according to ranking. It will be an uphill battle but I’m excited to try this information at my level and eventually have it move up the corporate ladder. 2018.1.5, Wk1, Wetzel.xlsx
