Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting is an approach to solving problems or correcting issues associated with
computers, sophisticated machines, software systems, and electronics. There are various
methodologies for troubleshooting and the method chosen will depend on the kind of problem at
hand. Some of the conventional structured methods of troubleshooting include; top down,
Bottom up, Divide and Conquer, Follow the path, spot the differences and Move the problem
(Preston, 2013).
Troubleshooting Methodologies
Top down is an approach whereby the technician carrying out the troubleshooting works
from the application layer (OSI) down to the physical layer while the bottom-up approach the
technician starts from the physical layer and moves up to the application layer. Using the Divide
and conquer method the technician begins from the middle of the OSI models stack and based
on his/her findings he/she can move up or down the OSI stack(Preston, 2013).
Using the follow the path approach the technician follows the network from the source to
