International/Global Health Issue
Healthcare Program for Refugees
Introduction
Among the current international issue that is affecting health on the planet is the refugees
and immigrants. The crisis of migration is among the major global challenges where people are
displaced from their home and countries by various factors. The lasted estimates for refugees were
recorded as about sixty million people, who have forcefully been evicted from their homes. This
has resulted in persecution, general violence, conflicts, violation of human rights and even human
trafficking. By 2015 only, the population of refugees was estimated to be about twenty million
(Langlois et al., 2017). The half of this population comprised of children, and the number has been
rising gradually since the time. Syrian has been identified as the leading country in the
displacement of people. This statistic has been contributed by the extended crisis in the country
coupled with a lengthy drought. As a result, more than a million refugees have sought asylum in
European countries such as Italy, Germany, and Greece among others. This influx of refugees into
foreign countries have posed various health-related challenges to these countries, with the refugees
themselves facing numerous health risks after being predisposed to these risks (Langlois et al.,
2017). This factor has necessitated the need for the preparedness of the host countries to provide
accessible healthcare access to this population. The increase in the number of the refugees is
projected due to other prevailing factors such as the increase in population, environmental changes,
unequal economic growth among regions and variable political conditions. It is therefore important
to develop an elaborate healthcare program that will reach for the healthcare needs of the refugees.

GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUE

3

It is estimated that about one billion people are migrating, which is the highest level of
migration that has ever been recorded. The refugees and migrants encounter numerous and distinct
challenges while accessing health care, which includes lack of knowledge on the local health
services, language barriers, cultural differences and vulnerability due to their state of
powerlessness in a foreign land. These people are faced with different needs such as changes in
climatic conditions, various health hardships during their migration, exposure to toxic especially
the farm workers, trauma especially for the people fleeing war zones and emaciation, due to
exposure to extreme conditions (Nathe, 2018). Most of these people are driven away from their
homes by calamities such as wars, diseases, famine and natural disasters such as earthquakes.
The program should be implemented in Italy. This is the country has been receiving the
most applications for asylum in the European Union, with more than three hundred thousand
applications being made in a year. Most of the refugees have been reported to flee from their
countries because of wars in countries such as Syria and the North of Africa in countries like Libya.
More than a million refugees escaped from their countries with a half a million being from Syria
(Aisch et al., 2015). These people have been absorbed by the European countries, with Italy being
among the top receipts. The implementation of this program in Italy, therefore, will facilitate the
reaching for most of the refugees to provide them with basic health care. The program should be
implemented in close collaboration with the Italian government and various stakeholders. There
should be a coordination of the ongoing related programs for the refugees if there are existing.
Objectives of the Program
The Healthcare Program for Refugees will aim at promoting good health among the
refugees in Italy since it is among the top countries experiencing migration pressure. The program
