The film, Michael Clayton, presents a less glamorized and significantly dirtier version of
the American Legal system. The protagonist, after whom the film is named, is very different from
the idealized image of a lawyer that one might associate with the profession. For reasons that go
beyond his control, including his working-class origins and standard education, and reasons that
are entirely in his grasp, his gambling problem and clandestine debt, Clayton will never reach the
