Culture influences healthcare since the way one culture view healthcare is different from
the way another culture perceive the same. Variations in culture in essence influence the manner
in which healthcare services are offered within the healthcare setting. Nurses must, therefore,
learn about cultural competence to enable them to render health care services that align with the
cultural framework of a particular culture. It is imperative therefore to understand that healthcare
is a complex issue and that healthcare providers must appreciate the value of cultural competence
in delivering healthcare to a population (Egede, 2006). Culture and language merged by belief
systems complicate the efforts of providing care to patients of diverse ethnic and cultural
backgrounds. Western medicine, for example, has developed into a cultural unit based on its
history, expectations, and codes of conduct, technologies, and methods. In this sense, it is
therefore essential to understand the value of culture healthcare and how culture influence
population health (Egede, 2006).
Integrating the health belief model facilitates the interpretation of the cross-cultural
health behavior and practices. Focusing on the African American culture and the Caucasian
culture in regards to healthcare, the cultural variations between the two cultures affect the level
of health provision. Each of these two cultures has unique belief systems and cultural practices
that may influence or hinder their level of treatment (Galanti, 2014). The African American
culture, for example, has two critical pertinent issues that affect care for the African American
elders for instance. These two issues include background knowledge about the historical issues
or events that might have influenced their attitudes or life in regards to healthcare and their
