Political Science : American Government Assignment #1: IdeaLOG and Political Socialization I. Purpose Most people are more than willing to tell you what they believe, but a smaller number actually take the time to consider why they believe it. The individual’s political values and beliefs are developed through personal experience and passed on generationally through socialization. This assignment is designed to get you to examine your beliefs and where they are located on a traditional scale and then to explore where those beliefs came from in your life. It also designed to get you to recognize the limited foundation for most people’s “devoutly” held political positions. In other words, very few people really think about WHY they favor certain positions, only that they do with complete confidence in their correctness. II. Assignment Steps Test your ideological leanings by taking the simple test provided at http://www.idealog.org. It could be extremely helpful to take the tutorial before taking the test. All of this may be found by clicking the “take the quiz” link. Answer the twenty questions to the best of your ability. All of the questions provide only two possible responses, so some may be difficult; but select the answer that is closest to your position. You do not need to print out the end result, but make sure to write down where you are on the graph and the scale because they are a part of the written assignment. After you leave, you cannot return without taking the test again. Test your ideological leanings using any other political ideology test you can find. Two additional tests are provided on the Canvas site, but you are free to search for additional tests. Make sure you identify the additional test you take. Talk to two additional people about their ideology (and whether they even know what it is or simply identify themselves with a Political Party). If possible, ask them to take the tests you took. This is not absolutely required, but could be helpful. These people should be close to the following categories 1) family member; 2) friend of similar age. Try to get a representative from each category, but that is also not required – two friends or a couple family members is fine. Think about your own political socialization and all the factors that affected, affect, or will affect your political views. The reading provided on socialization could be helpful at this point. Also think about WHY the people you talked to may hold the ideological views they do in opposition or in agreement with you. In other words, what socializing agents may you have in common or different. List three or four main socializing influences in YOUR life and you are ready to complete the assignment. (This is the most important part!!) III. Requirement Write a 3-5 page essay-styled paper. The paper must be double-spaced, 10-12 font, and 1-inch margins. The assignment is an essay, NOT a business report or a question and answer worksheet. An essay has an introduction paragraph, followed by a body of paragraphs, and ending with a conclusion paragraph. All the paragraphs flow into the next. Paragraphs have at least three sentences. DO NOT attach any charts or pages from the ideology test sites, just discuss them in the essay. To receive a 70% the paper must, at a minimum, meet the format requirements and respond to the following prompts: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Where did the IdeaLOG test place you on its scale? Briefly discuss what this means based on the tutorial on the different ideologies. What additional test did you take and where did the other test place you on their scale? Were the two tests consistent? Why or why not? Identify the additional people you talked with and where they stood. If they took a test, use that information here. 6) Discuss three agents of socialization in YOUR life that helped bring you to this ideological position at this time. (this an important part!!) 7) Discuss how socializing agents may have influenced your additional people in similar directions or opposite directions. For example, was your family member similar or different, Why? Was your friend similar or different, Why? (this is an important part) A paper receiving a 75% or higher will do the above, but do so in a more articulate, thoughtful, and grammatically correct way. Ability to express yourself in writing is critical in politics, so it counts in your grade. Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems. Please read the paper of the assignment carefully: Here is the prompt for the socialization exercise. Please read it carefully. Below are also links to the main required ideology test and links to a couple others that you may use if you wish - or find your own. Assignment Explanation: read word document called “IdeaLOG and Socialization-2” The Required Ideology Test: https://www.idealog.org/ Here are two additional ideology tests that you may use or you may find your own everyone must do an additional test. http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz/ https://www.politicalcompass.org/ Here is an additional reading on socialization that may help you understand the concept. View the PDF document called: “Socialization” (this so important to read so you understand) ======================================================================= And the following are more information that I got from the professor 1-Compare the two tests that I took (I have attached them to you as word documents. They called test one and test 2) The professor also said we can talk about what I believe and why I believe it so you may talk about that little bit. The paper should have intro. bodies and conclusion In at least 2 paragraphs or more 2-test another person and take the result and compare it to you (you need to take the test as well and so that you can compare ) 3-discuss three agents of socialization in your life (ex: family, religion, age, education ) And how they work, or how they affect the answers in at least 3 paragraphs or more Please consider that that voice of the paper should be written by a girl that is from middle east and Muslim . IDEALOG AND POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION

Political ideologies are different from one person to another and they depend on several
factors, political ideologies depend on gender, age, the level of education, religion and race.
America was first inhabited by Latin Americans before people from European countries and
from across the globe migrated to America to compose it with different races. The different races
among other few factors are a determinant of personal political socialization. There is more
political socialization as the years are going by because of changes in several things. For
instance, there, people are more educated now days than they were educated in the old days,
education is increasing political awareness as people learn politics through education. Political
socialization tests are taken as a student is joining university and they are asked to fill certain
forms which are analyzed to state their political beliefs (G Massialas, 2014).
An individual’s income also determines the political ideologies determines political
stand, people who have a high income and are rich highly suggest there be a limited government
than one that is more for the people. They believe the people should be doing more for
themselves than the government does for them. Religious is the other factor that determines
political socialization and the choice of the government the people are likely to choose, those
people who are religious believe the government should do more f...
