All answers will be checked for plagiarism. Instances of plagiarism can result in probation or possible dismissal from the school.
Grading: Please be sure to follow all guidelines (number of sentences/showing all calculations) and to provide the correct metric units of measure. All questions are 3.33 points (.33 for units). You MUST include units on all your answers.
For any math based questions you must show all your work and explain any numbers that are not clearly understood by the problem.

Physics Midterm Exam
1. Use at least two to three completed content related sentences to explain why physics
is considered the basic science. Provide at least one example to explain how physics
relates to other sciences.
Physics is regarded the most fundamental science because other sciences draw from various
concepts of physics such as motion, thermodynamics, forces, as well as electromagnetism.
Additionally, other bodies such as mathematics also derive from physics such as various laws of
physics. Other sciences basically rely and derive from most of physics concepts as a result,
physics is regarded the most fundamental science. For example, chemistry that focuses on the
various behaviors of atoms deploys concepts of forces that are derived from physics.
2. You do work on something when you lift if against gravity. Explain how work
relates to gravitational potential energy using at least two complete content related
sentences. If the lifted object is released, describe the change in energy. Be sure to
define all terms used in both questions.
When an object is lifted from the ground work is done in change of the object’s gravitational
potential energy. The work done = the force applied x the distance moved. When the object is
released, the gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy
refers to the energy possessed by a body as a result of motion. The gravitational potential
energy refers to the energy possessed by a body as a result of its position in the gravitational
field.
3. In terms of momentum change, explain why it is best to “give” when catching a
baseball. Provide at least TWO other examples of situations in which you want
“give”.
When a ball is moving a high speed its momentum upon hitting stationery hands will be high and
as a result will hurt the hands more. However, when the hands “give” the time of impact is
lengthened that minimizes the impact of the ball on the hands. Hence, it is better to give when
catching baseball. Other examples where one might want to give include when someone is about
to bump into you; moving a few steps behind and putting your hands ahead will minimize the
impact. Additionally, in cases of a car or bicycle collision, increasing the time of impact will
help minimize the impact. The same case applies to when catching soccer or playing basketball.
Since mass is constant, lengthening the time minimizes the impact of the ball or a car during
collision.
4. A boy fires a table tennis launcher. Briefly describe the forces and impulses on the
launcher and the ball. Explain which has momentum. Explain which is moving
faster. Be sure to use at least 3 to 4 complete content related sentences.
The forces and impulses acting on the ball and launcher will the same because Force = mass
x acceleration. The ball and the launcher will have the same momentum in opposit...
