1. Please explain and define at least ways/techniques to conduct research and how can
you apply them to the field of Health Psychology, explain the three categories and
give examples of quantitative, qualitative, and action research. Why is it important
to conduct research in Psychology?
Techniques/Ways/Methods used to conduct research in Health Psychology include;
•
Survey – where subjects/sample population reply to questions or statements either during
an interview or in a questionnaire.
•
Experiments – a health psychologist uses this technique to identify the cause
(independent variable) – effect (dependent variable) under extremely controlled settings.
There is testing of hypothesis when carrying out an experiment.
•
Participant Observation – in health psychology, the researcher focuses upon his/her
subjects systematically while he/she joins them as they conduct their daily activities.
During research in health psychology, this technique may tend to be more descriptive and
exploratory forcing the researcher to stay in the field for quite some time.
Types of research are;
•
Quantitative research - utilizes numerical analysis to test hypotheses and make
predictions, and defines occurrences by use of figures such as graphs, pie charts and
others. In health psychology, it involves the advancement of original statistical
techniques to measure and operationalize human conduct. This type of research involves
fields of mathematical psychology and psychometrics.
•
Qualitative research – defines the quality and type of the subject of interest, and also
attempts to comprehend and interpret an occurrence. In health psychology, the researcher

uses structured interviews, ethnography and participant observation to gather the
necessary information about the subject.
•
Action research – this type of research involves the two mandates of a study, that is,
improvement of a local situation or subject and the development of knowledge. These
two mandates or goals are achieved through the direct involvement of the potential
subjects of the requirement information during the research. Examples include; selfsurvey, trade-offs, field experiments and interviews.
It is crucial to conduct research in Psychology so that psychologists can comprehend their
