1) Background
Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the leading causes of death in Latin America,
ischemic heart disease taking principal position in most countries. According to the World
Congress of Cardiology Report, 55% of Chilean population of adults is at risk of a
cardiovascular occurrence with an increased morbidity and mortality rate mainly affecting the
productive demographic aged between 35 and 74 (Lanas, Serón, & Lanas, 2013). Cardiovascular
illnesses are among the three most prevalent causes of incapacitation among adults. The average
invalidity rate among women and men is 49 years and 53 years respectively, making it a
financial burden to the country’s healthcare system (Lanas, Serón, & Lanas, 2013). 29% of the
country’s population die from coronary heart disease, of which 36% suffer from coronary heart
disease while 36.3 % die from cerebrovascular disease (stroke). Studies have indicated that Chile
faces a major risk of atherosclerosis among adults with obesity, diabetes, cholesterol,
hypertension, and smoking being high.
