Public Health Policy and Decision Making OpEd PIECE INSTRUCTIONS An important tool for public health practitioners to influence public opinion is the OpEd, a persuasive and informative opinion piece that is published in newspapers/media sources. Create an OpEd piece answering the questions below. Be sure to answer the questions thoroughly using the textbook, the lecture, and other materials as appropriate. Also review the following documents in the module folder, How To Write OpEd and Argument-The-Writing- Center, for information on OpEds. Position for consideration: In your view, do people have the right to health insurance coverage? Why or why not? Take a position either for or against. Be sure that your rationale includes relevant health policies/laws to support your position, such as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, “Obamacare”. Take either position you like, as it will only be read and evaluated by the instructor. Final OpEd: note the following for the OpEd: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Completely answer all elements of the OpEd questions Incorporate original thought and insight into your opinion piece Find a variety of appropriate sources for the topic Develop strong paragraphs focused on discussing specific ideas that flow in a logical fashion throughout the OpEd, providing the reader with appropriate guides to the structure of the paper. It is best to use formal headers for the reader to understand the sections they are about to read. Use transitions within paragraphs to demonstrate the logical flow of ideas Write a strong introduction that catches the reader’s attention, introduces main points, and presents a clear argument for your OpEd Finish with a conclusion that summarizes main ideas effectively and provides a strong solution to your argument Students are encouraged to use both internet databases as well as the library’s resources as appropriate Students should evaluate which sources are the most useful, as opposed to using those which are merely easiest to locate Summarize articles/resources used effectively and accurately Be very careful if/when using directly quoted sections of text- not more than one or two sentences if necessary to make a point for the reader (and appropriately cited). Citations should be according to APA standards within text, as well as in your list of references. Proofread to eliminate careless errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Your OpEd should be 700-800 words in total. You can add a couple of charts or figures if you like, but they are not required. Save your OpEd in the following format: last name_OpEd.doc. So my assignment would be Staley_OpEd.doc.

HEALTH INSURANCE COVER.

The bitter pill.
Why should people die prematurely or become bankrupt due to medical bills? In my opinion

body injuries, sickness, disability and death. It helps reduce the cost incurred for such expenses.
Health insurance coverage should be an obligated right to every citizen of a country rather than a
privilege to the interested parties. A health care research conducted in US in 2012 showed that
62% of bankruptcy among individuals was due to medical bills. It also showed that there was
low rate of cancer survivors especially those who did not have the medical cover. In my opinion
the government should ensure that every citizen owns health insurance coverage.
