Distinguishing Faith from Science
Environmental Science is one area of human existence where faith inextricably
intertwines faith and science. Before the natural sciences evolved into what they are today,
societies relied on the faith (as espoused by religion) to explain natural phenomena. Granted, it
was an opportunity for the major denominations to come up with some ‘interesting’ positions on
the science behind the natural environment. However, the only considerations in this paper are
those that come from the Bible and which can be cited in the text. On the other hand, science will
provide its own set of truths; the objective being that science is not at cross-purposes with the
Holy Bible understanding nature.
Faith, Science and Human Interaction with the Environment
In the Holy Bible, one notes that God tells humanity to go forth, multiply and subdue the
world (Genesis, 9:7). Even after the great flood that Noah survived, the central theme has always
been that human beings are custodians of the wealth that the planet has to offer. Sustainability is
a central tenet of the responsibility of humanity to its environment. One of the ways of
maintaining dominance is through information. Many lessons in the Bible rely on an intrinsic
knowledge of the workings of the nature around us. For eample, in the book of Proverbs, the
faithful are encouraged to consider the ways of the ant, that they may learn the value of a strong
work ethic (Proverbs6:6). That is an empirical fact. Behavioral scientists prove that the ant is an
industrious insect. But the science differs from faith in the sense that it breaks down the subject
matter entirely. For instance, faith will stop at identifying the work ethic of ants for a religious
purpose. But then science will go a step further and detect the specific hormones that drive ants
to cooperate while in a colony. The difference in this instance is that science proves facts for
their sake, while faith proves facts for the benefit of sociological objectives. The latter can be the
means to the former’s end; with the latter remaining a tool at best.
