Twilight in the wilderness is a fine painting by an American called Frederick Edwin
Church in the 1860s, just before the onset of the American Civil war. The picture depicts a
magnificent view of a beautiful sunset in the mountain wilderness, and it richly exhibits a lot of
the American uniqueness at the time it was painted. In those times, America did not appreciate
the beauty of nature; the natural resources were only considered valuable if they could be of use,

celebration of the arrival of the railroads in Council Bluffs, and it shows tree stumps standing
where the wilderness used to be. This symbolizes the small price that needed to be paid for the
larger gain, which is civilization and creation of settlement for more people, while the train’s
headlights powered by the engine stand for the process of leading the way for future settlers; the
dawn of a new day for Americans.
