1.The American culture is evolving by changing how we perceive each other, allowing differences to accelerate prosperity, neutralizing gender roles, and creating safe spaces for voicing opinions. However, these significant changes have come with repercussions that are harming the possibility of a harmonious society. The Story of X offers an enlightened look into how blinded society has become to the promise of great change. I think the story delves into how fear affects society's ability to accept what we do not understand. I also feel that if this experiment was to be tried negative backlash would outweigh the message, since our culture is in the middle of sorting out the differences among us, to eventually join together.

Not too long ago, the majority of this country emphasized traditional gender roles in an effort to stabilize our differences. Males working and females taking care of the home and children were keeping cultural ideals steady. Slowly, this notion has begun to change as more males are staying home to raise children while females are providing income for their family. This gender role flip is not yet deemed completely appropriate by our society, but as time passes and the fight for equality continues, gender roles may soon reach neutrality.

Other cultures have their own specific roles that are affected by gender. My husband grew up in a Mexican family that was dominated by females. It was socially unacceptable for males to tower over females and for females to “cower” to males. Males typically worked long hours in labor settings while females raised children, cooked, and cleaned. The men were very stern with their children but not with their significant others. This violation of norms would result in blazing fires among the family, set by women, to demand respect for the hierarchy in place.

2."The Story of X" has showed how hard it is to be raised as gender neutral in a society of norms and sanctions towards the ideas of gender only being boys and girls and no other choices available. I can understand from an outsiders point of view about how deviant the choice of raising a child to be gender neutral and not accepting the norms of society. The interactions that influenced the other children to act like X was inconceivable towards their gender roles as boys have sports and girls have cooking. The type of clothing X has to wear to reserve its neutrality of being classified as boy or girl. This taboo has affected the other parents perspective to see X as a rebel and that its all Xes fault for rejecting society's goals associated by gender.

I like to point out how uneasy it was to read about a child to be raised gender neutral in such a discriminatory world.

Gender does play a significant role in any society. The Story of X examines the harsh reality of what culture has deemed acceptable by the specific standards that society has created for it, but also has shown a possible road of eliminating pressure based on gender.
