Description

This paper is designed to allow exploration and development of some of your own ideas about counseling. Using your creative thinking, as well as your reactions to the theories reviewed in this course, discuss your approach to counseling. Your discussion must incorporate at least two theories of counseling. Do not describe the theories, but rather address the following points (and any others of your choice):

  • What about the two theories fits who you are? For example, do you share their beliefs about human nature, the development of mental illness, the likelihood of recovery, the focus on cognitions vs. feelings, the approach to diversity and cultural differences, etc.
  • What aspects of the theories fit best with the client population you are interested in working with?
  • What ethical considerations are relevant when considering the two theories?
  • With recovery orientation in mind, what modifications, if any, would need to be made to the theories, to support work in diverse environments, including those comprised of clients who suffer from mental health and/or addictive disorders?

The paper must be organized using headings and sub-headings of your choice.

The paper is to include at least 7 citations from at least 3 peer-reviewed counseling journals (no Web-sites!). Expected length: 6-7 pages; to those, add a Title page and a Reference page.

COUNSELLING THEORIES

Introduction

The two counseling theories from the class reading that I find very useful are the
behavioral theory of counseling and the cognitive theory of counseling. These two theories
proved to fit my personality, behavior, characteristic, thoughts and perception about what takes
place in my life. Besides, the two theories had certain aspects that best fit the client population
that I am interested in working with in future. Of great significance is the fact that the two
theories of counseling proved to be of importance to me given the fact that they have certain
elements of ethical consideration when taking a client through a counseling process. None the
less, the two theories seem to require certain modifications in line with the recovery orientation
to make them more compatible to support work in diverse environments.
The aspects of the two theories which fits who I am
The behavioral therapy theory of counseling best fits who I am in the sense that it takes
into consideration whatever I learn in my daily life when trying to influence my future actions. In
addition, it best fits me in the manner in which it uses the overt and converts mechanism to try to
make a positive impact on the life of an individual. I share the belief that operant conditioning in
human beings is important in making a positive impact to the overall actions of the individual
with unacceptable behavior (Kendall & Kriss, 2014). I also share the same perception with this
theory of counseling which notes that by using the power of reward, it is possible to increase
human behaviors towards a positive change. Equally, I agree with this theory because it fits who
I am, especially my belief that punishments have the ability to decrease the overall occurrence of
a behavior that is deemed unethical or morally unacceptable.
The second counseling theory that best fit who I am is the cognitive theory. I share the
belief of this counseling theory about the human nature which is specifically anchored on

thinking and reasoning to create some change on human feelings and behaviors. My choice of
this theory is based on the fact that it is more focused on solving the human problem that needs
counseling through problem-solving skills (Beck, Epstein &...
