Scenario: Adam

After you have completed the Reading, post your initial response to the following statements.

Adam is a 16 year old high school student in a suburban neighborhood. Through the end of middle school, Adam was an A student, and had many strong friendships. Once he entered high school, things began to change. He started to be ridiculed by some of his classmates, and struggled to find a group of peers that he could relate to. His grades began dropping, and he became a C student. His teachers describe him as an intelligent individual, but one that appears to be shy and not highly motivated. Adam’s parents note that he has become more defiant, and has started spending time with peers who have a negative influence on him. His parents found vodka in his room, and also found marijuana one time. They tried to deal with his behavior in different ways from being very strict to very lenient, and everywhere in between. The counselor at Adam’s school has been meeting with him and describes him as someone who is trying to explore where he fits in and who he is as a person.

  1. As you gathered from the scenario, Adam’s peer relationships changed when he entered high school. Explain some of the positive and negative influences that peers can have on individuals in the adolescent stage of development. In your answer, illustrate the role that peers seemed to play in the scenario that was presented.
  2. Adam’s parents and his school also played a role in the scenario that was described. Explore the role of the parents and the school with regard to the developmental stage of adolescents. Determine whether or not you think the school played a positive or negative role in Adam’s life. Recommend any interventions that you would put into place in his school and home environment in order to try to improve his behavior and academic performance.
