In the Proposition NPS article (found in Course Documents), review the value of prepositioning disaster supplies ahead of a disaster. In each case presented, determine if the effort to move supplies made a significant impact on the success or failure of the event.  This section describes several natural disasters that happened in the past as described in the article. Wells Fargo had set high goals for their employees to gain new customers and increase the number of accounts. When employees could not keep up with the demands, many decided that creating fake accounts with customer information would suffice. Eventually, things would start to crumble when customers realized that they had accounts that they had no knowledge of opening. Millions of fraudulent accounts had been created due to the high demand for sales within the company.Regulatory companies were made aware of these allegations from customers that were questioning the accounts. In 2016, national attention was drawn when the company was fined and made current and previous customers check their accounts to see if they had fallen victim to the same actions. Wells Fargo has been in many criminal and civil lawsuits and have been forced to pay various fines. In February 2020, they faced another fine of $3 billion that is to be made payable to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Recently, Wells Fargo reported quarterly losses of $321 million. Wells Fargo should not have put such a heavy and unrealistic quota for employees to achieve. This is what leads to falsifying documents and accounts and ending up costing them more money in the long run. These actions make it hard for consumers to trust them and want to do business with them. More oversight needs to be in place to ensure that lower-level employees are acting within the law and good judgment. Supervisors need to be doing continual checks to ensure that all new accounts have the correct information and that they are being opened with the correct consents in place, such as valid signatures and identifications. The corporation committed a rather sizable accounting fraud estimated to be $3.9 billion. AIG’s fraudulent activities included bid-rigging, stock manipulation, and accounting fraud (Writers, 2019). The federal trade commission describes bid rigging as “Whenever business contracts are awarded by means of soliciting competitive bids, coordination among bidders undermines the bidding process and can be illegal” (FTC, 2017). AIG falsely raised its loss reserves in 2000 and 2001, and falsely reported these rises on its financial statements by two fake deals aimed at quenching investor scrutiny of the diminishing loss reserves of the corporation. Furthermore, AIG knowingly entered into two additional transactions that lead to the misrepresentation of financial statements (SEC, 2006). Allegedly former CEO, Hank Greenberg was involved or at a minimum was aware that loans were being reported as revenue, clients were directed to insurers whom had pay-off deals with AIG, and traders were instructed to inflate stock prices (Writers, 2019). Surprisingly the corporation is still around today, “AIG was one of the beneficiaries of the 2008 bailout of institutions that were deemed too big to fail” (Gethard, 2020). AIG’s illegal and unethical acts were detected through an SEC investigation. There are speculations that the SEC was tipped off by a whistleblower. The punishments for Hank Greenberg, CEO resulted in no criminal charges and termination from AIG. The SEC investigation resulted in AIG settling; paying out $10 million in 2003 and $1.64 billion in 2006 with the SEC, for $115 million for the Louisiana pension fund, and for $725 million with 3 Ohio pension funds to the SEC (Writers, 2019). “Fun fact: After posting the largest quarterly corporate loss in history in 2008 ($61.7 billion) and getting bailed out with taxpayer dollars, AIG execs rewarded themselves with over $165 million in bonuses” (Writers, 2019). In theory this would have been caught by internal controls, or by an independent audit team, however historically speaking accounting fraud is not committed by regular accountants but by executives.
