Most research occurring today is in the preclinical stage, with the experiments involving
genetics, animal participants, and all methods of transmission, infection, and replication. Using
animals has allowed the medical community to study the latency and persistence of HIV, which
has resulted in major advancements regarding treatment. Several ethical issues come into play
with the use of animal participants in testing (Ward, 2015).

The case for animal experimentation is usually defended by the medical community by the
facts that animals can be a useful substitute for human biology and these tests can provide
relevant information leading to major human health benefits. There is however substantial
scientific literature that raises concerns about reliability and value for understanding the
physiology of humans. This literature suggests that the overall harm of this type of testing may
outweigh any benefits and that researchers would be better off in developing testing based on
