Why a Career in Healthcare
My grandfather was one of my childhood heroes because of the challenges he had to
overcome to provide his children an opportunity to get an education despite the perception of his
society and his socioeconomic status. He was very a hardworking and kind-hearted person who
loved his family and supported them to pursue and accomplish their dreams. However, his life
was cut short due to leukemia and pulmonary heart that drained him of the energy and vitality
that he displayed whenever he visited our home. As the only surviving relative that lived close to
him, my parents assumed the responsibility to support his care during the most difficult period of
his life as he battled with these debilitating terminal diseases.
Meanwhile, the experiences of caring for him and joining in his several visits to the
hospital served as moments of awakening and affirmation for my desire to pursue a career in the
healthcare industry. First, the lack of empathy showed by the attending physician and several
others that we requested to replace him during the period he was admitted in the intensive care
unit showed me the need for change agents in the industry. Secondly, the desire is based on the
shortage of culturally competent physicians in the industry. One of the factors that I consider
responsible for the perceived lackadaisical attitude of the physicians is the increasing number of
patients that are required to attend to per shift. The high workload is causing burnout and
preventing them to acquire skills that would make responsive to patients from diverse cultural
backgrounds. Therefore, I consider my pursuit of a career in the healthcare industry as a
physician as one of the ways to address these issues, fulfill my grandfather wishes, and
accomplish my goal of helping regain their health and wellbeing.
As a current major in healthcare administration and policy, I have been exposed to the
operational and regulatory aspects of hospital and other healthcare settings thereby affording me

the chance to learn about the fundamentals of medical care and patient needs. The courses and
subjects learned on this program are also considered suitable foundations for pursuing postbachelor programs in medicine and healthcare including the ones offered by Georgetown
University. Also, I consider this opportunity as critical to the pursuit of my career plans and
success in the industry because of the existence of faculty-student and undergraduate-graduate
interaction that is developed through the institution’s tight-knit community, classroom activities,
and mentored research programs. An additional reason for my interest in this program from
Georgetown University is the relationship that the institution has with professional associations
that influenced the participation of their members in conferences and workshops that are
designed to help students understand the link between theories and evidence-based practices.
Furthermore, this postgraduate program in medicine would enable me to focus on the
methodologies for improving and delivering high-quality patient-centered care despite the issues
and challenges in the industry. It is my strong conviction that the department’s emphasis on
research and practical training are the right tools that are essential for honing my skills and
applying the concepts and principles derived from my previous academic training in healthcare
administration and policy. Therefore, Georgetown University’s reputation as one of the leading
tertiary institution’s for the utilization of innovative research techniques to epidemiological and
population studies is the only right platform to accomplish the objectives that would enhance my
professional chances.
While the demand of learning in a highly-competitive institution such as Georgetown
University might be daunting for an international student, my experience during the
undergraduate program with XYZ University has equipped me with the coping skills for dealing
with some of the cultural and social issues that could adversely impact my learning experience

and the pursuit of academic excellence. Secondly, my resilient nature and dedication to the
relentless pursuit of my aspirations are strengths that I regard as valuable ones for meeting the
challenges and expectations of an advanced degree in medicines. Also, the problem-solving and
critical thinking skills that I obtained during my participation in the various subjects and course
in the undergraduate program are part of the essential ones that healthcare practitioners need to
develop treatment and intervention protocols for the patient-centered service paradigms in the
industry.
Finally, Georgetown University is not just a leading institution in the world but one that
would provide me a platform to acquire technical and scientific skills and knowledge of
advanced concepts in medicine in ways that no other institution can guarantee. Its access to vast
resources in this field is the ideal panacea to the type of graduate education that I desire thereby
making my preferred choice necessary for my education. I am social, but the aspect I adore most
in myself is that I am a team player. Therefore, I hope that my participation can enrich and
strengthen the community of student in this university.
