THESIS STATEMENTS Avoid self-evident statements: "Little Red Riding Hood is a little girl that gets lost.” A thesis should not be worded as a question. A thesis should appear at the end of the Introduction and should neither be too broad or too specific A thesis should give readers a general idea what you plan to prove in the body of the paper. A strong thesis justifies discussion. A thesis should not have I THIN K nor should it have IN MY OPINION or I BELIEVE EXAMPLES: Unit #1 - In Fairy Land Little Red Riding Hood Bad: In my opinion, the story of Little Red Riding Hood is a story of good and evil. Good: "Little Red Riding Hood” serves as a feminist tale, demonstrating how an independent, intelligent woman subverts the forces of male power and privilege. Good: It is because of disobedience that Little Red Riding Hood suffers. Bad: A wolf is a wolf is a wolf. Good: Considering that wolves are intelligent, carnivorous creatures, it is only natural for the wolf to calculate his devouring of the little girl and her grandmother. Unit #2 - In Sickness and in Health “The Lady with the Dog" Bad: The couple engage in an illicit affair because they are bored. Good: The couple are able to love each other more purely because they are not married and thus do not engage in the trappings that only a long term relationship proposes. "A Temporary Matter” Bad: The couple share some very interesting secrets. Good: It is because of the relative anonymity and obscurity of the darkness that the couple can finally recognize each other for the first time. Outline Structure for Literary Analysis Essay I.
