Should added tax be imposed on cigarettes and other tobacco products?
In recent decades, there has been a serious debate whether the federal government should
increase tobacco taxes. The public remains divided about federal tobacco tax hike. While others
passionately support an increase in federal tobacco tax, others are opposed to such a policy. The
proponents of federal tax hike argue that such a policy would reduce smoking and extend lives,
reduce smoking-related deaths, raise revenue and benefit lower-income Americans. On the other

increase inequality, encourage people to smuggle illegal tobacco products and promote religious
bias against smokers. Both sides of this debate have valid arguments that must be considered in

Human life is the most precious gift and any policy that preserves and extends life is worth
implementing. An analysis of the effect of federal tobacco tax increase reveals various benefits:
reduced number of smokers, improved quality of life, reduced number of deaths and increase in
government revenue.
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness in the United States. A
report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that smoking leads to one in five
deaths in the U.S., approximately 480,000 deaths annually. The study also reveals that exposure
to secondhand smoke causes 41,000 premature deaths, including lung cancer and heart disease.
The CDC report highlights that life expectancy for smokers is at least 10 years shorter than those
of nonsmokers. Furthermore, a report by the Surgeon General predicts that nearly 50% of today’s
