Mechanisms of Flax Seeds and Grape Seed Oil in Preventing Cardiovascular Disease
In the recent years, lifestyle diseases such as cancer and obesity have become among the
leading health problems in the United State and the world at large. The diseases have proven to
be very costly to the healthcare systems of the countries such as the United States of America
where more than a third of the adult people in the country are obese and therefore at risk of other
associated problems such as cardiovascular disorders and inflammation (CDC, 2017). Therefore,
apart from the medicines that may be used to mediate the obesity and cardiovascular disease,
scientists have also studied various dietary solutions that may be incorporated into the daily lives
of people for better health. Two of the foodstuffs that have proven to have anti-obesogenic and
anti-inflammatory effects are the flax seeds and the grape seed oil. The mechanisms of the
bioactive components in the food sources are different.
Grape seeds acquire their anti-obesogenic as well as anti-inflammatory properties from
their high concentrations of tocotrienols in their oil. Tocotrienols are forms of vitamin E that are
unsaturated. Research has shown that tocotrienols reduce adipogenesis as well as the formation
of adipose inflammation. The muscadine grape seed oil is among the best sources of alpha and
gamma tocotrienols and therefore have the best potential of preventing obesity. Even though it is
known that the grape seeds may be important in reducing obesity, people hardly benefit from the
seeds because of several reasons. First, the seeds are used to make wine. During the process, the
grapes are pressed and the seeds are thrown as waste. Also, when the grapes are eaten, the seeds
are also not consumed. Therefore, it is important that ways of incorporating the grape seed oil
into human diets are found.
The alpha and gamma tocotrienols in the grape oil seeds prevent and reduce obesity from
the expression level. According to a study that was conducted by Zhao et al. (2015), the grape
seed oil tocotrienols reduce mRNA sy...
