Ascribed status refers to the status that an individual member of society acquires without
making any effort. The status is just bestowed on them by the community with no apparent
attempt by the individual (Foladare, 2014). Achieved status on the other side is the status an
individual acquires as a result of efforts made to get it. Capabilities and special power by
individuals may also fuel individuals to gain status in their society. Ascribed status is given to
an individual based on the tradition, practices, norms, traditions, and beliefs of the society.
On the other hand, acquired status is acquired through the completion of specific tasks and
responsibilities. Therefore for an individual to gain the earned status, they must prove their
ability and efficiency.
Ascribed status is a construct of traditions and customs and other cultural factors of
society. In contrast, acquired status is not linked with traditions and customs instead it is as a
