To have a single story about a character, place, culture or nation means to have a single
perception of that character. It means to see the character in the same light. Having a single story
denies one the ability to perceive the subject in a light different from that which they have been
programmed to associate with the character. The danger of having a single story is that it programs
an individual to have a unilateral perception of a person. Consequently, the individual is unable to
appreciate the many diverse attributes that the person possesses other than that which they
