Final Thoughts (optional) We’ve discussed in this class the importance of “mindfulness” not only in our work professionally but also as a significant tool for self-care and sustainability in our personal lives. Our ability to be present with our clients helps ensure we are hearing and sensing in other ways the experience of our client in their journey of engagement and meaning making. Key to the ability to be mindful is recognizing what takes us from our place of presence with our client. Recognizing our own biases, prejudices, or fears is critical in this self-discovery process. Identifying the “triggers” creating emotional responses based upon visual cues, words spoken, symbolism viewed directly or created in our minds through memories, are all important if we are to remove the emotional power they have over us in the work with our clients. You are encouraged to utilize your learning partner(s) for this project, especially in the “processing “ of the assignment. You may turn in an individual assignment or as learning partners, but it must be evident I see the individual contributions to the assignment. PART I: PERSONAL PROCESS (4pts) Discuss your personal reaction to the true story depicted by the film, “Prayers for Bobby.” Respond to this section from your personal place of being, not in your role as a social worker. Use the following as a guide to help with identifying any “triggers” for you and your response to those “triggers.” (PLEASE NOTE: You are not required to answer every question. It is provided to help stimulate your thinking and consideration processes as you frame your thoughts. There is an expectation that you are specific in identifying the trigger, your response, and why you think it triggered you. • • • 1 Was there a person or were there people who created a reaction for you? Describe who and what were you reacting too? If there was one of the characters you felt connected to for whatever reason, identify who that was and why you felt connected to them? Describe the event/events and what were you reacting to? Describe any reaction or trigger that occurred as it related to: the overall subject matter, story line, how the story was told, or having to watch the story as a part of a classroom assignment. PART II: PROFESSIONAL PROCESS (7pts) From your professional role as a social worker, assigned as the case manager for the Weaver Family, respond to the following: Social Worker Preparation As you step into your role as case manager, identify anything you might have to “let go of” (assumptions, stereotypes, early messages) in order to serve this family. Identify specific areas you should be aware of and/or have greater knowledge of in working with this family. Presenting Concerns Where would you start with this client? Fully describe your assessment of the problems? Social Work Roles From your assessment, identify two (2) social work roles in addressing the presenting concerns. In addition to identifying the role, please provide information on how that role will function. For example, if you identify “Educator” as a role, please be specific as to what education will be provided to whom and why.
