Running head: OBESITY TODAY 1 Why People Are Overweight Today Lisbeth Smathers Wilmington University OBESITY TODAY 2 Why People Are Overweight Today Obesity is a major issue that shouldn't be ignored. More than ever people in the United States are becoming overweight. It a well-known fact that the best lifestyle is one with a healthy diet and exercise, but why are people becoming more obese each year? This is because bad food choices, advanced technology, and lack of exercise. These issues have one common thing, convenience. Let's dig into these topics a little bit deeper and see how they are impacting people's weight today. First, the food we consume is based off convenience and not nutrition. Food is the fuel that keeps us going and the medicine that keeps us healthy. Not everyone understands the important role that food plays with our bodies, and food companies don't make it easy for people to make the right choices either. How often is there a commercial for fresh broccoli, or a commercial for fresh picked apples? What is seen in commercials is adds for rich and savory foods, cheeseburgers, pizzas, and other fattening meals. When out of the home and on the go, fast food restaurants have made it so easy to grab something quick even though it's unhealthy. Everything that is done today is based on convenience and saving time. Why waste time on peeling an apple when you can grab an overly sugared granola bar or bag of potato chips? It doesn't matter what is being consumed, if we can save time doing it. Second, technology has played a major role in helping people save time, but that too has an impact on people's health and weight. With online shopping people have less of a need to leave their homes. Kids are no longer riding their bikes around the neighborhood to see what their friends are doing, instead they are texting or calling them on the phone. Video games give kids more reasons to stay in the house and sit on the couch, and parents find these games and TV to be a convenient babysitter. The more time we spend in front of screens, the less we are moving OBESITY TODAY 3 around and getting our metabolism going. With bad food choices and sitting on the couch regularly people are becoming tired and lazier each day. Exercise was previously a part of our everyday lives and now it's something that needs to be scheduled. Third, exercise is a key component when it comes to managing the weight of the human body. Exercise doesn't just help to keep weight down, but it also helps to reduce the risk of a heart disease or diabetes. More people are finding they have less energy or struggle to find time to exercise. This is shocking when technology has helped to make managing time more efficient. They don't see this and only focus on getting other tasks done before focusing on their health. The longer people go without exercising, the harder it can feel when starting. People don't realize that the more they sit on the coach, the more their bodies slow down. This gives them less energy to want to do things that are important like exercise. In conclusion, obesity is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately through better food choices, less screen time, and more time being active. Each day that passes where we find less of a need to get off the couch and get moving, is another step closing to bad health and becoming obese. People don't notice how quickly this habit can be instilled in them and passed onto their children. Children see their parents sitting on the coach each night on their phones mindlessly eating, and this is what is normal to them. They too will continue this lifestyle as they grown up and become adults. People need to realize that their health is more important than anything else. They only get one body and they need to take care of it. This isn't something hard to do and can be started by a simple change in the snack they bring to work and taking the stairs instead of the escalator.
