Part I: Principles of the Constitution
The constitution consists of some primary principles. Briefly explain the following principles
and their significance in shaping American government.
•
Self-Government:
Self-government can be defined as a system of government where the citizens are the ones
ruling themselves with no external government influences affecting the government. During
colonial America, the laws would need to be approved by the citizens. Its significance in the
shaping of the government is that it led to the development of independent states and no external
government would influence the states. The government relies on the principles set by selfgovernment (Kahn, 1992).
•
Separation of Powers:
The principle of separation of powers was established to make sure that three branches of the
government, that is, the legislative, the judiciary and the executive are independent bodies with
each having different functions and powers. The significance of this principle when it comes to
the shaping of the government is that it led to a government which is divided into three branches
where each branch shall be distinct from the other, and no branch can interfere with the functions
of the other (Scalia, 1983).
•
Checks and Balances:
The principle of checks and balances was established for the sole reason of preventing one
branch of the government from abusing its powers or control the other branches. The system
exists so that no branch will be more potent than the other. The significance of this principle in
shaping the government is that it ensures that power will not be convened in just one branch of
the government. Hence, no branch will dominate the other (Jay, 1788).
