Identity is basically who an individual is and what one defines himself or herself as
being. It is the state of mind in which someone recognizes their character traits that lead to
finding out who they are, what they do, and those that remain unique to them. ‘Meditation on
Yellow” by Senior Olive, “Theme for English B” by Hughes, and “Coral Road” by Hongo are
three remarkable books that explore the theme of identity. The theme of identity gets expressed
in the three works of literature to make the reader intrigued and relate to the characters’ traits,
experience, and emotions.
Both work of literature deal with people that experience an identity crisis as they try to
either find or define themselves to become more at ease in the society they belong. The
characters in these books are from different countries from which they get forced to either
immigrate to another country or they get colonized due to certain circumstances. In “Meditation
on Yellow,” Senior reflects the Caribbean culture and history during the colonial period as they
struggle to reclaim their identity. “And I have reached the stage where I have to say: lump it or
leave it I can’t give any more” (Senior 3), indicates that the indigenous people are tired of

remaining submissive to the greedy colonist who has continually taken advantage of their
humility. It shows a light that signifies hope for reclaiming their identity....
