The Role of Women in the Laxardal Saga
The Saga of the People of Laxardal and Bolli Bollason is a story of vengeance and
conflict among Icelanders at the time of the conversion from pagan religions into Christianity.
The conflict revolves around marriages, land disputes, inheritances, and sibling rivalry that spark
a blood feud. The complex plot of the saga focuses on several women who portray the distinct
characteristics especially during this transformational era in history. One of the dominant
characters in the story is Gudrun who gets married to four husbands and in the end regrets that
“to him I was worst whom I loved most” (Kunz 171). The portrayal of women as figures to
identify within the story represents the male fear of dominant woman and the gradual switch
from a male-dominated community to one of female empowerment through significant roles of
women in the society.
Gudrun is presented as a clever woman through her actions in the story. Being the main
character in the second half of the story, she is the cause of the story’s main feud between Bolli
and Kjartan when she marries Bolli when Kjartan is away. Her clever side is especially portrayed
