America is among the most ethnically and racially diverse nations in the world. Over the
years, court proceeds have been held to curb the issue of education segregation in the United
States education system. However, irrespective of court decisions such as one by Brown Vs
Board of Education 52 years ago that marked the blueprint to strike down segregation,
classrooms in the United States are increasingly becoming segregated. Though America is
characterized by wide range of communities from different race, religion and backgrounds, this
has contributed to persistence of segregation of housing patterns, education provision and
discrimination that has attributed to stiff grip of poverty (Rodriguez, 2000).
In the United States education system today, most students are based on classification
bounded on categorical schemes that include whites, blacks, Hispanics, America Indians and
Asians. This is a universal category deliberated to separate the students within an institution of
learning. However, segregation of students based on race and ethnicity is termed as a general
category that disguise crucial heterogeneity within the major groups. According to Sandefur
(2016), segregation of students is based on a separation scheme regarded as subgroups that
