ENGR102: Engineering Problem 2 Project #1 People Movers LLC is a public transportation company that is looking to replace the engines in their fleet of buses. They have been given information on three different engines from manufactures A, B, and C. Perform the below described calculations and analysis to determine which of the three engines you would recommend for People Movers LLC. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the level of certain emission constituents, such as Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Hydrocarbons (HC), Particulate Matter (PM), and Carbon Monoxide (CO). Engines are certified to meet current emissions standards at the time they are manufactured, these regulations are in place to limit the amount of harmful pollutants that enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The aforementioned substances have negative environmental and health effects, NOx has been shown to contribute to acid rain and aggravate pre-existing lung conditions, HC can get trapped in lung tissue causing inflammation and breathing difficulties, and CO is an odorless gas that causes nausea, headache, and in extreme cases, death. Data has been provided for three engines, the data was obtained from dynamometer testing, following the Federal Test Procedure (FTP). The FTP is a 20 minute test, made up of four, five minute segments; each represents a certain driving scenario. The scenarios are as follows New York Non Freeway (NYNF), Los Angeles Non Freeway (LANF), Los Angeles Freeway (LAFY), and then a repeat of the NYNF. Perform the following analysis in a single MATLAB script file. 1 - Import the Engine Emissions Data into MATLAB 2 – Assign each column of Excel data to a variable name in MATLAB 3 - Convert the Engine Torque from N-m to Ft-lb 4 – Make two plots, one of Engine Speed (RPM) vs. Time (sec) and the other of Torque (ft.lb) vs Time (sec), each plot should include three data sets, one associated with each engine. Include a legend, title, and appropriate axis labels. 5 – Find the Maximum values NOx, CO, and HC associated with each manufacturer and the first time that value occurs. Display the values in the command window in table like the one shown below. (“For Manufacturer X the average NOx emissions were XXXX g/s and the average CO emissions were xxxxx g/s”) 8 – Plot CO and NOx vs. Time for each engine (3 plots) Be sure to include a legend, title, and appropriate axis labels. 9 – Calculate the horsepower at each time step for all engines, note : Power (HP) = Torque (lb.in) x Speed (RPM) / 63,025 10 – Find the average horsepower over the cycle for each engine. Display the values in the command window in table like the one shown below. Manufacturer A B C Avg. HP 11 – For each engine plot both HP and Torque (ft.lbs) vs. time. (3 Plots) Label where each new 5 minute segment starts with its acronym. (ie. New York Non-Freeway (NYNF)). Be sure to include a legend, title and appropriate axis labels for each plot. 12 – Based on the above information and analysis recommend an engine to the People Movers LLC, include a supporting explanation.
