One of the most famous paintings in the United States history was painted by John Gast
to George Crofutt in 1972. The well-composed painting had lots of meanings depicted in it. The
well-composed painting came to be known as the American Progress. Also, the art visually
described how the westward march of the American civilization.
The painting comprises various objects, people and activities. There is a city with a river
along it on the eastern side. Trains are moving towards the western side and are from the city.
They may be depicting the American invasion of the West. There is a big mountain in the
background. Below the mountain, we see a faint image of what may be wagons pulled by three
animals probably horses also moving westwards. Towards the left, we see farmers with oxen and
a carriage with six horses. Above the carriage there is a cart driven by oxen. There are children in
the cart. Just above the cart but in the same direction, a man is riding a horse moving westwards.
On top of the man riding a horse is an Indian village. Children are perhaps dancing outside the
houses. In front of the farmers are four men with one man riding a horse. Three men surround the
one riding the horse, and they may signify that they were his servants. A man leading them is
seen carrying a gun. In front of the men is an animal, probably a bear. The men might be in
pursuit of the animal (Prothero, 2013).
