WHAT IS THE BUZZ WITH GENETICS?
Abstract
Evolution is the transfer of traits and genes from one generation to the following
generation in a population. Evolution by itself is fueled by genetic drift and natural selection.
This study focused on observation and evaluation of the body color or the fruit fly through
generations for a duration of seven weeks. The specific fly in focus in this study is the
Drosophila melanogaster and the analysis is based on the Hardy Weinberg equilibrium concepts.
The main hypothesis for the study is that the evolution of the fly would not fit in the HardyWeinberg equilibrium. This is an indication that the population evolved over the period. The
study process involved preparing several vials of Drosophila melanogaster and alternating them
between incubation and anesthetization every week. The occurring changes in generations of the
Drosophila melanogaster was then observed and recorded. Two dominant types of Drosophila
melanogaster occurred – the ebony type (e) and the wild type (+). After the seven weeks study, it
was alarming to find that the Drosophila melanogaster was in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
This was an indication that evolution had not occurred during the seven weeks period. One
notable observation is that the number of the ebony flies did not decrease over the period as
expected. This is mainly attributed to the several errors that might have occurred during the
study. One notable and most prominent is the incubator light. Past studies have extensively
sighted that the incubator light greatly affects mating among the Drosophila melanogaster flies.
However, the short generational lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster offers a great opportunity
for research on evolution. This is mainly because all the factors affecting evolution as well as the
effects of these factors on population are easily observable and conclusions made.

Introduction
Evolution is basically the general process through which a generation of a population
passes on its characteristics to the next generation. Two main factors influence and facilitate
evolution – genetic drift and natural selection (University of South Florida, 2017). Apart from
these, the theory of natural selection favors the organisms suited to the immediate environment,
allowing such organisms to increase in survival and reproduction. On the other hand, natural
selection ensures that organisms that are weak and not suited to the environment are qu...
