Mr. McCarty Writing Seminar IV College Research Paper Assignment Assignment: For 2nd Semester of Writing Seminar IV you are going to write a 5-7 page college research paper. You will pick a topic that relates to your expected major. If you are undecided about what major you will choose in college, please pick a specific topic or issue that you care and are curious about. Most of the work should be completed in class over the next 6 weeks. All steps in the research project will be graded in the Essay/Project/Presentation category of your grade! We will complete the following 10 steps: 1. Write your topic in the form of a thesis question for a research paper that interests you within your expected major or an area of interest. Make sure your topic is limited (think of who, what, when, where, why, and how). Write a brief paragraph explaining why this is a good, relevant topic, written in Google Docs and submitted to Google Classroom. (10 points) Due before your block period on either Wednesday, Feb. 14 or Thursday, Feb. 15. 2. Find 5-10 good, reputable sources of information (articles) for your topic and create an Annotated Bibliography in Google Docs and submitted to Google Classroom. (20 points) Due Friday, Feb. 23. 3. From the sources you found, make a list of research notes of various evidence you might use for the essay, with web links included underneath. This should be a list of just relevant facts, statistics, expert opinions, specific examples, and analogies. Each piece of information should be 1-2 sentences long, NOT an entire paragraph. You should have between 30-50 notes in your list, with notes from all 5-10 sources. Submitted either on notecards or a list in Google Docs submitted to Google Classroom. (30 points) Due Friday, March 2. 4. Write an outline for the essay, in a Google Doc, submitted to Google Classroom. (40 points) Due Friday, March 9. (Last Grade for Quarter 3!) 5. Write a rough draft of the essay, written entirely in a Google Doc and submitted to Google Classroom. (50 points) Due Friday, March 16. 6. Peer-editing (20 points) in class on Monday, March 19. 7. One-on-one meeting with a teacher at the Writing Center (20 extra credit points) Due by Friday, March 23. 8. Self-editing and revisions according to input from peer-editing, the Writing Center, and by carefully going through your own essay, using Grammarly.com, and using resources available. like OWL Purdue (for content, organization, style, and grammar). 9. Final Draft submitted to Turnitin.com. This must be in MLA format, at least 5 pages of typed content, not including your Works Cited, properly citing at least 5 sources. (200 points) Due Thursday, March 29. 10. Keynote/PowerPoint/Prezi presentation (50 points). Due Monday, April 9.
