Define Protected Health Information and when it can be disclosed
Protected health information (PHI) refers to the patient’s healthcare data collected by
professionals such as the health status, demographic characteristics, payment for healthcare
services, tests and laboratory results, and provision of healthcare services among others that aims
at identifying the patient and appropriate care. In general, the PHI covers matters from the
medical records of the patient and the history of payment of the services. Covered entities have a
mandate under the HIPAA Privacy Rule to protect individual’s health information and gives
rights to the patients regarding the data (Dunn et al., 2013). The Act also provides a balance by
outlining the circumstances that health professionals can disclose the information for patient care
and other health factors that aims to promote the general good of healthcare system.
The primary purpose of the Privacy Rule is the definition of the applicability of the
individual’s PHI. A covered entity has a responsibility by law not to disclose or use the PHI
except when the provisions in the Privacy Rule demands so or authorization of the individual of
