BIG DATA AND ITS BUSINESS IMPACTS

Abstract
Today, the value of decision-making that is data-driven is being recognized daily, and there is an
increasing interest in “Big Data.” Successful organizations are analyzing Big Data and obtaining
business advantages. While the potential of Big Data is real, there exists a wide gap between its
promise and its realization. Some organizations have not even begun the planning stage of the
implementation process of this Big Data strategy, perhaps because they are not aware of what
Big Data is and do not understand the benefits that it can bring to them. This research paper
explores the impacts that Big Data has on businesses. It also highlights some of the problems that
come with data, all of which can negatively impact businesses and impede the progress of the
Big Data technology.

Introduction
The term “big data” has been in use since the 1990s, and some people give John Mashey
credit for coining it or even making it popular. According to Alam et al. (2014), the basic
characteristics of Big Data are “3v’s which are volume, velocity, and variety” (p 446). Here,
volume implies that data is in large quantities. Big Data does not sample; rather, it observes and
tracks what happens as well. Velocity implies that Big Data is regularly available, and is just like
social media streams wherein data is increasing on social media networks, e.g., tweets on Twitter
and posts on Facebook. The last thing, variety, implies data in numerous forms such as the semistructured, unstructured and structured formats. It means that Big Data draws from text or even
video, and completes missing pieces through the fusion of data. Typically, Big Data includes
data sets with sizes that cannot be captured, curated or even managed by the commonly used
software tools within a tolerable elapsed time. As noted by Alam et al. (2014), the “size” of Big
Data is growing at an exponential rate. In 2012, Big Data rang...
