You may use quotes from people in your paper, but don't use huge chunks of what they said this is about what you personally have discovered. Please provide the names, ages, and an email address for each person you interviewed. Write a one-page (approximately 500 words) paper on what you discovered. A sample paper and rubric is on the next page. Assignment 3.1 Sample Paper Cultivation theory is the theory that says the media shape how people view the world. This theory states that the longer you spend listening to and watching the media, the more you will believe what is portrayed on the media's shows. This theory helps explain how a person's perceptions of the world are shaped and sometimes distorted by the media. The theory predicts that over time, the media will encourage a view of the world within users. The first person interviewed for this assignment was Alex Kuisel, age 18. He heard the definition of cultivation theory and says that he believes in this theory fully. He has experienced the effects of cultivation theory and says that watching television is the main culprit behind the theory. An example he gave me had to do with watching fit guys on television always getting the good-looking girl. He says if he believed what he saw on television over and over again, no guy who is skinny and short would ever get to date a pretty girl. He also said ISIS stories about beheadings make him afraid that there will be a terrorist attack nearby and that he could be beheaded. Another person I interviewed was my mother, Karen Green, age 52. She believes the theory to a certain extent. She is the kind of person who likes to form her own opinions on some things, but some things she watches she will believe. She has experienced cultivation theory when she watches things about football and all the domestic violence that is going on. She says that it makes you want to believe that football athletes and all athletes are violent people and will hit anyone. Here, the media has shaped the way she sees ALL football players, even though she knows deep down, that they can't all possibly be violent. I too believe that this theory is true, and I believe that a lot of people have the media shape their worlds for them. I have experienced these effects first hand when I watch the news for example. When I watch the news, if they make a compelling argument or cover the same story over and over, I tend to believe them and be on their side about that certain story. Watching repeated violence on the news also makes me feel like I live in a really violent world and that I could get shot. The people I interviewed feel bad about the way this theory works because they say that people should create their own opinions on the issues they watch or read. Cultivation theory in my opinion plays a role in the person's everyday life. And that is not a good thing.

Running head: REFLECTION PAPER

Cultivation theory
Cultivation theory investigates the effects of long term watching of television. The
messages conveyed through television have both short and long term effects on the audience as
new ideologies and perspectives are acquired. The audience tends to generally accept these
messages which in turn changes the way they see the world in reflection to what they watch in
televisions.
The first person to interview was Kelvin Ongaya, age 17. After he heard the theory and its
definition he gave his own view. Since childhood he has been watching violent action movies and
they have been his favorites. He views the world as a violent place often marred with sufferings,
