Who Leona Woods was
Leona Woods was a famous woman scientists who was among other women working on
the Manhattan Project (Atomic Heritage Foundation, 2017). She was be in Illinois in 1919. As a
strong student at 19, Leona graduate from the University of Chicago with a B.S degree in
Chemistry before attaining her Ph.D. in 1942 on spectroscopy.
Leona Woods was the lone woman physicist among those who worked at Met Lab. She
got an assignment of constructing a neutron detectors on the Chicago Pile 1 which was the
globe’s first manned critical nuclear reaction. She got the job while competing her Ph.D. Lena
Woods was also a mother of one son, Peter after marrying John Marshall in 1943.
She was a university professor. Before moving to Los Angeles to work as visiting
professor at the University of California in Environmental studies and engineering, Leona had
spent some years at the Institute of Advance Studies before moving to Brookhaven National
