The three main purposes of the Supreme Court are to resolve disputes between states, to resolve conflicting opinions of lower federal and state courts, and to resolve constitutional questions. An example of a case in my opinion is Hernandez v. Mesa (case link below). The Hernandez v. Mesa case is about the Hernandez parents suing Mesa in Federal district court for killing his son. Hernandez was with friends in El Paso, Texas near the Juarez, Mexico when Border Patrol Agent Mesa arrived and detained one of Hernandez's friend. Hernandez's ran and hide behind something, then Border Patrol Agent Mesa shot twice to Hernandez and kill him. His family sued Mesa, but because Hernandez was a Mexican citizen they couldn't do anything about it.

Trial courts are federal courts that are also called district courts. During this court it would be the first time the jury and judge would be hearing the case. Here they can bring witnesses and evidence to the trial, where the jury and or judge will make an ultimate decision and or ruling.

A appellate trial is a trial that either the defendant or prosecutor did not like the decision that was made at the trial court, therefore is trying to appeal the decision in a higher court, being the supreme court. During this trial there are 9 supreme judges who review the case from the trial court, in order to figure out if they had made the correct legal decision, when it came to the case.

The main difference between the two is that the trial court uses a judge and a jury to make their decision, but if found to have not made the right legal decision, a higher court, supreme court can over see that decision if asked for an appeal and granted. They are both similar because they are both courts trying to make a decision that is fair for the party involved.
