Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder has been one of the most misunderstood psychological disorder. It is also
known as the manic illness disorder. While it is normal for human beings to have mood swings,
the bipolar disorder is an extreme. The people who suffer from the disorder experience intense
mood swings, which are manic and coupled with an increase of energy, delusions and an
inability or desire to sleep. The disorder, therefore, is characterized by ‘cyclical periods of high
energy and elation and then low energy and despair’ (International Schizophrenia Consortium,
2009). Its symptoms and manifestations differ among people, with attacks in some people taking
years to recur while in some, there could be frequent attacks annually. There have been four
models of bipolar disorder that have been discovered, but they all involve dynamism in the
moods, energy levels and the activity abilities of the individuals. The four types of bipolar
disorder are Bipolar I disorder, Bipolar II disorder, Cyclothymic disorder and the specified and
unspecified bipolar and related disorders.
Etiology
The biological perspective indicates that there could be indeed some brain differences between
