Assignment 4: Persuasive Paper Part 3: Possible Disadvantages and Answers
Peer reviews should provide feedback to a peer on the criteria expected in the paper. Follow these
instructions:
1) Receive a classmate’s paper from the the “Essay Drop off / Pick up Zone” in Week 6.
2) Download the Peer Review Feedback Form from Blackboard.
3) Comment on all criteria, noting strengths and / or areas for improvement on the feedback form.
4) Provide completed Peer Review Feedback Form and classmate’s paper to your professor.
Note: On-ground students should submit the feedback form and paper to the professor during the
class meeting in which the paper is reviewed; online students should submit the feedback form and
paper to the professor via the Assignment Tab in the course shell.

Running head: REARVIEW CAMERAS

Rearview Cameras
All vehicles should be equipped with a rearview camera to prevent rollover accidents
which may lead to death. According to a report by USA today in 2010, there were more than 210
deaths and 15,000 injuries, with 31% of these accidents being children under the age of 5 and
26% of the accidents being adults over the age of 70. (Woodard, C. 2014). I have on numerous
occasions ran over a curb, hit an object too small to see from my rearview or side mirrors, and hit
a trash can or two. Backing out of my driveway I can see what is above the trunk of my car, but I
can’t see below it. With so many small children in our neighborhood owning a vehicle equipped
with a rearview camera would remove the fear of having such a tragic accident.
There have been several accidental deaths of small children being run over by an
automobile because the driver didn’t see the child behind the car. In Denver, Colorado a father
accidentally backs over his 2-yr old son in his SUV. In Covington, Washington, an 18-month old
girl was backed over by her Aunt in a Ford F-150. These types of accidents occur mainly by
family members. They aren’t aware of children finding their way behind a vehicle and a child
that small is impulsive. Cameron Gulbransen was a 2-yr old who died in 2002 from an accidental
back over. In 2008 Congress passed a bill called the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation
Safety Act of 2008. In it, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard was to be revised to
eliminate blind spots behind vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) has made it mandatory that by 2018 all vehicles need to be equipped with a rearview
camera.
Parking lots are another place where you must be very watchful. Too many times I have
seen children in a hurry to get to the car, slip away from their mother and almost be hit by a
driver who was backing out of a parking space. I have grandchildren between the ages of 1 and

3, and the odds of one of them running out behind a car are great especially when they get
excited about going for a ride in the car. Older adults (the elderly) are subject to being back over
because they move at a slower pace and some need assistance in getting out of the way of a
vehicle.
Limited visibility makes it difficult to determine what is directly behind you when trying
to back a vehicle out of a driveway, a parking lot or even maneuvering a car in reverse. One
reason for these accidents is not able to see from blind spots. A blind spot is an area viewed
behind where a driver can’t see. (fig 1). SUVs, vans, and trucks have a larger blind zone than a
midsize vehicle.
fig 1
Consumer report has measured the blind zones for various categories of vehicles, and
these are the ranges for each category:
•
Sedans 12 feet to 24 feet
•
Minivans 15 feet to 26 feet
•
Sports Utility Vehicles 13 feet to 29 feet
Rearview Cameras
•

Pickup trucks 23 feet to 35 feet (Weisbaum, H. 2007)
A vehicle equipped with a rearview camera takes away the limited visibility.
Some of the issues with having a rearview camera are inclement weather, night vision,
and the camera view blockage. These are a few issues I have experienced with having a rearview
camera. When it rains, visibility is blurred, and at night visibility may not be clear because of
lighting on the street. Just imagine if it’s snowing and how hard it would be to keep a rear
camera clean of debris for it to operate correctly. Water and dirt can produce limited visibility
especially when a camera is positioned in an unobtrusive position on the vehicle and having to
adjust your mirrors due to night vision (the glare of lights from another car can be a pain
especially when you’ve been driving for long periods of time) can be frustrating. Vehicles
equipped with a proximity sensor and camera aren’t considered to reduce many accidents since
drivers tended to rely on the sensor more than the camera, and the sensor used when trying to
park to avoid hitting any objects behind you. Other obstacles include sunlight that shines right on
the lens interfering with the driver's view or shadows.
Deaths from back over accidents are tragic. Small children and older people are the main
victims of these accidents. Parking lots and driveways are where most of these accidents occur.
Limited visibility, blind spots hinder a driver from seeing obstacles which may cause serious
consequences. The Cameron Gulbransen Kid’s Transportation Safety Act of 2008 brought to
light the need for having rearview cameras, and the National Highway Transportation Safety
Administration requires all vehicles under 10,000 pounds to have backup cameras by the year
2018. (Nelson, 2014).
Some advantages to having a rearview camera installed in a vehicle or even buying a
vehicle that includes a rearview camera are when it comes to traffic and parking you have an

advantage in being able to see what is behind you. Parallel parking can be a pain, and a rearview
camera allows you to see the distance between the sidewalk and the space in which you must
park. A few automobile makers have installed video display in the actual rearview mirror. These
types of mirror afford drivers a clear view of what is behind them when they go to back up their
vehicles. Having this type of mirror is advantageous in helping ensure people don’t hit anything
that’s in their blind spot as well as smaller people and objects that they can’t easily see from their
rearview mirrors. (Carztune, 2014). Auto-dimming is a feature that operates using both the
reflective abilities of the unit itself and through a computer chip and sensor embedded in the
device. Reflected headlights are dimmed automatically, making sure that nothing is distracting to
the driver - even in intense situations. (ThomasNetNews, 2015)

Obstruction of the view in larger vehicles is due to the larger headrest, and because of
this conventional reflective mirrors in most SUVs and minivans are being replaced by LCD

mirrors. Another advantage is some cars come equipped with navigation monitors or dash
displays. These monitors or displays are large enough for someone to see without having to
strain their eyes. I like the fact that I have a camera which built into my navigation system and as
soon as I put my vehicle in reverse the camera comes on. I use the camera primarily for when I
am parking or in a parking lot since I believe this is where most backup incidents occur, but still,
I use my mirrors to check and make sure there aren’t any obstacles in my way when I am
backing up.
Given the disadvantages and advantages of a rearview camera, I feel they are beneficial
to have in every vehicle as it gives the driver a better sense of safety if rearview cameras used
properly.
