Essay on the Kingfish and the Realm. Huey Long Political system. Louisiana poor residents.

Write an essay in which you state and DEFEND your opinion of Huey Long. What is YOUR opinion of Huey Long, given your reading of the book and the chapter on Long in the textbook? Please make sure you don't just say generalities-- that you thought he was a positive or negative figure--whatever you say needs to be backed up by historical evidence. So it's not just how you feel about it--it's what you can back up with evidence. Make an argument which defends your opinion. HINT: In making this argument, you need to include both his good and bad qualities, including specific examples, and make a judgment as to your opinion. And as stated, your opinion must be backed up with evidence.

At the end of William Ivy Hair’s book, The Kingfish and Realm, author William Ivy Hair quotes an eye witness at Huey Long’s funeral. At the funeral, Hodding Carter, a newspaper reporter and staunch enemy of Huey Long, observed, “Close beside the bier (moveable frame that holds the coffin) crowded the thieves and sycophants of the inner circle. Beyond wept the poor.” Huey Long is one of the most loved and one of the most hated figures in Louisiana history and both sides can claim some justification for their opinion. He provided for lots of roads, bridges, free school lunches and many other very visible things for people in Louisiana. Significant numbers of the poorest of Louisiana residents held him in high esteem. At the same time he had a significant dark side in which he craved power and became practically a dictator of Louisiana. His administration was rife with outright theft and corruption, and many of his supporters went to jail after his death. For 30 years after the death of Huey Long the political system in Louisiana was divided between supporters and opponents of the Long political machines. Write an essay in which you state and DEFEND your opinion of Huey Long. What is YOUR opinion of Huey Long, given your reading of the book and the chapter on Long in the textbook? HINT: In making this argument, you need to include both his good and bad qualities, including specific examples, and make a judgment as to your opinion. And as stated, your opinion must be backed up with evidence. Your paper must be 4-6 pages, double spaced, 12 font, standard margins, and must contain quotes (but not overly long or unnecessary quotes) from the The Kingfish and His Realm. You can only use the Kingfish book and your textbook as sources. Once again, remember that though you are stating an opinion, it still MUST be backed up by historical evidence. Papers are due Mar 23.
