Introduction
The idea of medieval period had been in existence for several hundred of years though
ignored as insignificant compared to the period it bridged. However, in the last thirty years,
medieval history has grown in popularity and is being taken as a subject of study in colleges and
universities across the world and more especially in the United States. In this paper, we shall talk
about medieval period history, culture, and music.
History and Culture
Medieval period happened from the beginning of the 5th century to the beginning of 15th
century. It started when the Roman Empire ceased and merged into the Renaissance. This period
is also well known as the Middle Ages. The history of the medieval period is categorized into
three periods. The early medieval history, the high medieval history and last, is the late medieval
history. The end of the Roman Empire is associated with the early Middle Ages. There was
population growth in the high medieval period which declined at the beginning of the 14th
century as a result of war, famine, and effects of plagues.
When the Roman Empire fell, it meant that there was no single government that could
bring together the people of Europe and therefore the church became the most powerful
established institution where royals and other leaders came for protection (Hollister, & Bennett,
