Case study: Six students who are English Language learners (ELL) in the 1st grade. The ELL proficiency levels for these students includes; two students are at level 1-Basic, two other students are at level 2-Low intermediate, one student at level 3- High intermediate, and the last student is at level 4-Proficient. This group of students exhibits no interest in science. How can you get them engaged, focused and eager to learn? Create a SIOP lesson plan that integrates language objectives, content objectives, and best instructional practices for ELLs, as well as authentic assessment. Use the SIOP Lesson Plan template attached below. I also attached a copy of the ELL Proficiency levels for you to review.

Choose a performance objective from North Carolina Common Core standards (1st grade Science) to create the content objective for your lesson (already done).

Select the English Language Proficiency Standards based on the needs of your students Consider applicable language acquisition stages of development in the development of your plan. (already done).

Integrate the following in the SIOP Lesson Plan:

  • ESL strategies ongoing, specific, and immediate feedback
  • Grouping structures and techniques
  • Building background and vocabulary development
  • Current materials for ELD instruction
