Modernity is the gradual transition of the traditional way of doing things to the scientific
or modern way of doing things. Modernization is characterized by advanced technology,
increased literacy amongst individuals, industrialization and social mobility. Modernization is
related to the westernization based on the fact that both scenarios are focused on making life
better through the adoption of science and technology and doing away with the traditional
societies.
Question 2
The scramble for Africa was motivated by the desire for power, economic strength as
well as the social factors in which the European countries wanted to have a share of the African
land. To the Europeans’ imaginations, colonialism was meant to showcase their political,
economic and social powers, an initiative that led to the scramble for resources and leadership.
This concept relates to the crisis of representation in the sense that most African countries still
look up to their colonial masters for political, economic and social aid, something that is
perceived to continued colonization though indirectly. Colonialism in Africa meant exploitation
of African resources as well as the origin of slavery and suffering.
