Discussion: Vasubandhu's Treatise on Three Natures Ok, I suspect this discussion and reading will be a real challenge for you. It will help if you do some light research on the Yogacara school of Buddhism, but all your quotes for this post should come from the assigned reading. Vasubandhu is complicated and nuanced. That being said, don't let his style intimidate you. As usual, grasp onto what you can make some sense of and do your best. After reading the article, write a response to the reading. In your response, discuss how Vasubandhu may address at least 3 of our 5 core course terms (selfhood, soteriology, apotheosis, eschatology and cosmic dualisms). If you can't find three, discuss why, based on his philosophy, he does NOT address them. Use at least one short quote for each of the 3 concepts. Buddhism in India (Read "Three Natures") attached file Buddhism, like all religions, is an impossibly broad category. There are numerous ways one could approach the study and, regardless, would still have a very incomplete picture. As scholars, the best we can do is to recognize that there are thousands of Buddhist texts, multiples teachings, and always complexity. Therefore, do not worry if you have no prior knowledge of Buddhism. As Vietnamese Zen monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, says 'sometimes knowledge can block wisdom'. Therefore, approach this material with an open mind. As with all our primary texts, there is much more going on than we can wrap our brains around. That being said, you should be able to pick out some of our core course concepts and see some meaningful parallels and differences to the other traditions we've studied thus far. What you should keep in mind is that the required reading this week is from Indian philosopher, Vasubandhu. Therefore, it is a representation of Buddhism prior to being influenced by the Silk Road traditions. Next week, we will see a very different face of Buddhism. TASKS TO COMPLETE: READ:
