Description

Read the following articles and write a 4- to 5-page paper that summarizes the socioeconomic determinants of kidney disease among ethnic minorities. Be sure that your analysis incorporates a discussion of the role of social attitudes with regard to race/ethnicity and class as a potential contributor to ESRD-related health disparities.

Socioeconomic Determinants of Kidney Diseases among Ethnic Minority Communities
Despite numerous studies documenting the presence of racial and ethnic disparities in
various health issues including infant mortality, cancer, and cardiovascular disease in the
American society, the disparity appears to be more pronounced when it comes to kidney disease.
It has been found that African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native-Americans have
significantly higher risks of developing kidney diseases when compared to Whites. For instance,
according to Nzerue et al (2002), incidences of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have been found
to be four times higher among African-Americans when compared to the white population.
Nzerue et al (2002) also continue to note that diseases that cause chronic kidney failure; such as
hypertension, diabetes mellitus, human immunodeficiency virus-associated nephropathy, and
systemic lupus erythematosus are more prevalent among the African-American patients.
Nicholas et al (2013) note that despite the ESRD being disproportionately higher among the

minority groups. There is a high chance that social, economic, and environmental factors play
major roles in defining these disparities. Therefore, it is paramount to have an elaborate
understanding the socioeconomic and environmental situation of these minority groups in
relation to the prevalence of kidney diseases. With such knowledge, rational public health
strategies can then be formulated to mitigate these disparities. This paper will exp...
